District Update from Governor Mike Wells

We will receive an update from the District Governor, Mike Wells.

Although Mike was born in Logan, Utah, he was raised in the center of the San Juaquin Valley, in Fresno, California. After a 2-year church mission in central England, Mike received degrees from Dixie State College and Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, Louisville, Kentucky in 1985. Ten years after purchasing a general dentistry practice in Tooele, Utah, he formed TDA, Tooele Dental Associates, and added two associates. TDA is currently held in partnership with his brother Brett R. Wells, also from Fresno, California.

In 2003 Mike joined Rotary shortly after a club had been chartered in Tooele. He served as club president in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. He was drawn to Rotary because of its extensive youth programs, an interest that had grown, having served many years as a scouting leader and the Tooele High School Water Polo coach. In 2008 he was the district RYLA chair, and has been a member of the district youth committee since 2006. In 2010 he was named the District’s youth services chair, now known as the New Generations Chair. Since that time, the district has been adding 10+ Interact clubs a year. He has also created a yearly international youth service project in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. In June 2012, he led nearly 200 Interactors and Rotaractors to Mexico, building three houses, serving in two childrens’ homes, a senior citizens’ center, and doing literacy projects in eight elementary schools.

Mike has received Rotarian of the Year, Tooele County Citizen of the Year, State of Utah Health Department Person of the Year, is a six-time recipient of Utah Water Polo Coach of the Year, and was recently awarded the Lifetime Humanitarian award.

Mike is active in his church, enjoys golfing with his wife, the performing arts, traveling, time with his family, and is an avid scuba diver. He and his wife Karlene (also a Rotarian and a past club president) are the parents of four children: Annie, Nathan, Brittany, and Bradley; and five grandchildren (soon to be six).
